The Drag is a nickname given for Guadalupe street that covers the west side of the University. A strip of shops that provides essentials for many UT students, like the Co-op serving as student’s go-to place to get books and their Longhorn apparel, clothing stores, and restaurants. With the proximity to campus and the importance of the street for Longhorns, here are some of the restaurants that you should check out at the Drag.
Don’s Japanese Kitchen
Want to eat some great food but on a budget? Look no further than Don’s Japanese Kitchen! This American and Japanese inspired cuisine is a great place to have lunch with your friends and get introduced to some great East Asian fast food.
The restaurant offers many selections of proteins from tuna to beef to chicken to tofu (for your vegan friends). All for less than $10! With their hip and sleek restaurant, they are the perfect example of Austin and UT.
Halal Bros
Halal Bros is one of the best Mediterranean fast food restaurants on the Drag. With great spicy chicken and mouth-watering shawarmas, why not take a ten-minute walk up the Drag to try this place out. Almost everything on the menu is under $10!
For many Halal Bros serves as their to-go place as they give you big portions for under $10. Most students bring their food home and save it for the next day. With that, they can save more.
Torchy’s Tacos
Torchy’s is the perfect embodiment of Tex-Mex (Texas-Mexican) food. Grew from a taco trailer to a Tex-Mex titan. Inspired by the lack of taco variety, Mike Rypka built this Tex-Mex titan into a Texas staple. With 16 different tacos in their menu, it becomes clear that they have one of the most extensive menu items for a taco restaurant. Ranging from $2.00- 3.00 each taco, you can expect that their tacos can fill you up.
Torchy’s is my favorite place where I can have some great Mexican street food! I know it is in their name, but their tacos are so great and spicy! They have many different tacos to choose from with even some vegetarian options to choose from!
Poke Bowl
When you hear the phrase “the U.S. is a mixing bowl,” it’s true! It’s very true to our next food on the list. Poke is a Hawaiian style sushi bowl, with many food selections of proteins, greens, and grains. Poke is one of those foods that translate to the identity of the country.
Take a ten-minute walk up Guadalupe St and try some amazingly healthy Hawaiian food! Even if you do not like the bowls, then you can get some Vietnamese coffee or Thai tea. As a UT student, you can get discounts there. Ohh… the perks of being a UT student.
Chipotle
Chipotle is one of those fast food restaurants that makes you keep coming back every single week. Chipotle is the place you go to when you want to eat out on some Mexican fast food. You can make a custom bowl with your choice of rice, beans, and meat as well as vegetables to put into your bowl. And you get a lot of food! I can rarely finish an entire bowl or burrito in one sitting.
With their delivery service, now you can order a chipotle bowl or burrito from the comfort of your home.
Tapioca House
Over 20% of the University’s students identify themselves as Asian-American students. Through this restaurant, Asian-American students find themselves feeling like home. Through their boba and their Asian food, the restaurant brought mom’s cooking closer to the students.
With the different variety of boba (more on their website) and different kinds of Chinese food, you have to try this one restaurant. This boba place has been a great part of many Longhorn’s life, and some had their first dates in this very boba shop. With the growing boba movement, this restaurant is one of the few boba places that are local to Austin and has its own place in every Longhorn’s heart.
Teji’s
For many Austinites, Teji’s is one of the most authentic Indian cuisines that are true to their heart and soul. Teji’s on Guadalupe continuously emphasize on being a student-friendly environment; this no wifi restaurant makes students keep coming back.
Teji’s is a long, skinny space, but they go big in their food. With their variety of North Indian cuisine, this place serves as a great addition to the variety of campus eatery.
