As the semester ends, we want to make sure you have all the information you need to maintain your F-1 status. You might continue studying with us next semester, or instead travel, transfer to a new school, or return home.
These reminders can help make your next steps clear and stress-free. We are grateful to have you as part of the ELC community, and we are here to support you every step of the way.

Continuing Studies
We would love to have you continue to study with us! Your energy, curiosity, and hard work make ELC a special place. Keep the momentum going and join us next semester for more learning and fun. You can submit your continuing student application and pay the tuition deposit online.
Does your I-20 end in May?
If your I-20 ends in May, be sure to submit your continuing application as soon as possible. You must apply before May 1. After that date, immigration law does not allow us to extend your I-20.
Does your I-20 end in August or later?
If your I-20 ends in August or later, you must still submit a continuing application, whether your I-20 ends in August or December 2026. Your I-20 will be shortened to end May 1, 2026, if we do not receive your application.
Summer Travel Reminders

Staying safe while traveling means keeping your important documents secure, staying aware of your surroundings, and following local laws wherever you go. Whether you are traveling inside the U.S. or internationally, check visa and entry requirements ahead of time. Make sure your passport, visa, SEVIS fee receipt, and I-20 (with a valid travel signature) are all up to date before you leave.
Traveling inside the U.S.?

Carry all your immigration documents with you. You must have a valid travel signature if you are traveling within 100 miles of the Mexican or Canadian border. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) may stop you to check your documents. Be sure to bring along your most recent I-94 to present if you’re asked.
Traveling internationally?

If you are traveling to a country other than your home country, make sure you have any visas required to enter the country or countries you’re visiting. We cannot advise on entry requirements for other countries, so check that country’s consulate or embassy website.
Check the travel endorsement section on Page 2 of your I-20 to make sure your signature is still valid (signed within the last year). You must have a valid travel signature to return to the U.S. This signature shows CBP that you have maintained your F-1 status and can re-enter the U.S.
Contact the ELC as soon as possible if you need a new travel signature or a travel letter.
When and how can I receive my travel signature?
First, check for a travel signature on Page 2 of your most recent Form I-20. Print your I-20 and sign the bottom of the first page in ink. CBP only accepts physical documents. The travel signature is valid for 12 months or until your program end date, whichever comes first.
If you need a travel signature, plan to visit the Texas Global office before you travel. ELC offers in-person student services and advising Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday of each week, 8:30 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m.
Did you know that the ELC has three Designated School Officials (DSOs) who can sign your I-20 for travel? Jack Taylor, Matt Hartley, and Teresa Baker are happy to help.
Immigration Documents Required for Re-Entry into the U.S.
Before you leave the United States, make sure you have all the documents you need to return.
These include:
- An unexpired passport (valid at least six months into the future)
- A valid F-1 visa
- Your SEVIS fee receipt*
- A valid Form I-20 with a travel signature (less than one year old)
* Lost your SEVIS fee receipt? Don’t worry. Go to the SEVIS fee website and click “Check I-901 Status” to download a copy of your receipt.
Transferring to another school?
We understand that all good things come to an end, but we are here to support you every step of the way.
Download and complete a UT ELC transfer-out form and email it to elc@austin.utexas.edu with:
- Your new school’s acceptance letter.
- A transfer-in form from your new school (if required).
SEVIS transfers will be processed for students with an average attendance of 75% or higher after final attendance is submitted. Students with attendance below 75% will be contacted to discuss their options.
You must request your transfer before leaving the United States. This gives your new school enough time to issue a new I-20 for re-entry. The UT Austin I-20 cannot be used to re-enter the U.S.
You must also request your transfer before the end of your 60-day grace period at UT Austin (ending June 30, 2026), and before the 15th class day of your new program.
Done with your studies in the U.S.?
Finishing your studies in the U.S. is a big accomplishment. After you finish, you will have a 60-day grace period to relax, prepare, and enjoy some extra time before returning home.
If you will not continue at UT or another school in the U.S. next semester, you may stay in the U.S. during your grace period (ending June 30, 2026). If your I-20 has a later expiration date, it will be shortened to end on May 1, 2026.
You cannot travel outside the U.S. during the grace period. We also discourage travel near the U.S. border, such as South Padre Island or Big Bend. You must stay in the U.S. if you want to travel before returning home.
