Independence Day

The 4th of July

  • Americans celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain in 1776.
  • Many Americans traditionally celebrate by spending time with family and friends, cooking outdoors on grills, and watching fireworks displays.
  • Since we are currently experiencing a peak of COVID-19 cases in Texas and many areas of the U.S., many fireworks displays and group gatherings have been canceled.
  • All City of Austin and Travis County parks and recreational facilities will be closed this weekend in order to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Austin Public Health is also asking that everyone avoid gathering with anyone outside their household this weekend.
  • One safe way to watch a typical 4th of July celebration is to watch “A Capitol Fourth” concert and fireworks show on Austin’s PBS station on television, streaming HERE on Youtube, or on Facebook Live.
  • Saturday, July 4
  • 7:00 – 8:30 pm Texas Time

Texas Statewide Mask Order

  • The Governor of Texas has ordered everyone to wear masks due to COVID-19
  • Masks must be worn inside all buildings open to the public
  • Masks must be worn outdoors when it is not possible to maintain six feet of distance from people outside of your household
  • Violations are punishable by a $250 fine
  • Children under 10 are exempt from this order
